(1795) Stampless folded letter, with contents written by army officer Gothar Mann, inspector of the fortifications at Quebec, to his daughter in England, rated "2/" and "to pay 1N" in manuscript, clear Quebec 20 FE colonial Bishop mark on back, British 15 95 Bishop mark receiver, an attractive early cover.
In 1785, Mann was sent to Quebec as captain and commanding engineer, charged with preparing defenses for the possibility of war with the United States. He writes of the challenges of receiving mail from the United Kingdom, noting "our patience in waiting for news from England is nearly exhausted, we have not yet received either the November or December Packets..."
