Description
Active Service cover from Sgt. Edward Edward Fenerty of the Western Province Mounted Rifles, postmarked Calvinia (FE 4), letter datelined Calvinia C.C., Jan 26th, to the sender's mother in St. John, New Brunswick, with c.d.s. arrival backstamp, a scarce example from the WPMR to Canada;
Fenerty shares detailed information of the soldier's travails, noting "I don't know when it will get to you, as we are cut off here from the outside world, and don't know when we will be relieved, but it will have to be soon, as the grub is getting very short. It is rather monotunous being shut up here, day after day, expect to be attacked any time by our friends the rebels...We expected to go down country, but no relief was sent up for us, so we have had to stop here ever since..[on Christmas] we had to be alert all day as the Boes seemed inclined to keep us busy..."
